How a Round Works

European Blackjack typically uses two decks of cards. At the start of a round, each player and the dealer receive two cards — both of the player's cards are face up, but only one of the dealer's cards is visible; the other remains face down (the hole card).

The goal is simple: get closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. Cards 2 through 10 are worth their face value; picture cards (Jack, Queen, King) are each worth 10; and an Ace is worth 1 or 11 — whichever is more favourable for your hand.

The player acts first — deciding whether to take another card. You can choose Hit (take another card) or Stand (stay with your current hand). The dealer then turns over the hole card and keeps drawing until reaching 17 or more. Whoever has a higher total than the dealer without exceeding 21 wins.

A key rule in the European variant is that the dealer does not receive the second card until all players have completed their decisions. This is what sets it apart from the American variant and introduces some strategic differences.

Bet Types and Payouts

Main Bet

You must place a main bet before each round. If you win, the dealer pays you at 1:1 — meaning ৳100 wagered returns ৳100 in profit.

1:1 Payout

Blackjack

If your first two cards are an Ace plus any 10-value card, that is Blackjack. This special hand pays 3:2 — meaning ৳100 wagered returns ৳150 in profit. If the dealer also has Blackjack, the hand is a Push and your bet is returned.

3:2 Payout

Double Down

In certain situations, you can place an additional bet equal to your main bet and receive exactly one more card. In the European variant, this generally applies only to hands totalling 9, 10, or 11. A successful Double Down doubles your winnings.

Double the Bet

Split

If you receive two cards of the same value, you can split them into two separate hands. Each hand requires an additional bet equal to your original. Each hand is then played independently.

Play Two Hands

Insurance

If the dealer's face-up card is an Ace, you can place an Insurance bet of up to half your main bet. If the dealer has Blackjack, Insurance pays 2:1. However, this bet is not favourable to players over the long run, and experts generally advise against it.

2:1 Payout

Push (Draw)

If your total and the dealer's total are equal, the hand is a Push. Your main bet is returned — no win, no loss.

House Edge — What's Behind the Numbers

In every casino game, the house holds a long-term mathematical advantage — this is the house edge. In European Blackjack, following correct basic strategy keeps this advantage relatively low compared to other casino games, which makes it appealing to players who prefer a strategy-based game.

The house edge is a theoretical average — results in any single session can be above or below it. The dealer always stands at 17 and has no strategic flexibility, but you do — and that difference is what sets Blackjack apart from other table games.

There are many myths about card counting. Online tables shuffle frequently, so that technique is not effective — but basic strategy applies in any format.

  • Correct strategy keeps the house edge low
  • The dealer always stands at 17 or above
  • Each round is independent — previous hands do not affect the next
  • Online tables shuffle frequently, so card counting does not apply

Basic Strategy for Beginners

Basic strategy is a math-based decision chart that tells you the most sensible move based on your hand and the dealer's face-up card. New players who learn this chart can significantly improve how they play.

Your Hand Value Dealer's Card Recommendation
8 or less Any Hit
9 3 to 6 Double Down, otherwise Hit
10 or 11 Higher than dealer's Double Down
12 to 16 2 to 6 Stand (dealer is more likely to Bust)
12 to 16 7 or higher Hit
17 or more Any Stand
Ace + 6 (Soft 17) 3 to 6 Double Down, otherwise Hit
Ace + Ace or 8 + 8 Any Split

The table above is a general guide for the European variant. Minor adjustments may apply depending on specific table rules such as number of decks and Soft 17 rules.

Keep in Mind

  • Generally avoid the Insurance bet — over the long run it favours the casino.
  • Never Split 5s or 10s — a combined 10 or 20 is a strong hand.
  • Once you Stand, the decision cannot be changed — do not Stand in a rush.
  • Practice with small bets and keep the basic strategy chart nearby while you play.
  • Do not raise your bets out of emotion — stay within your set budget.
  • On digital tables, take your time — there is no time pressure.

Live Dealer vs Digital Table

Live Dealer Table

The 33 game live casino section offers live European Blackjack tables from multiple studios including Evolution, Pragmatic Play Live, and Ezugi. A real dealer distributes cards via video stream. You can also chat with the dealer using the chat feature. This is ideal for experienced players or anyone who wants the feel of a real casino.

Digital (RNG) Table

In the digital variant, card distribution is controlled by a Random Number Generator (RNG). You can play at your own pace with no time limits. This format is especially useful for beginners or anyone practising basic strategy.

Play on Mobile

With the 33 game Android and iOS app, you can sit at a Blackjack table from anywhere. The app is available through official channels. You can also play directly in a mobile browser without any separate software.

If you enjoy table games alongside slots, you can find out about different types of slots on the slots page.

Table Limits — Where to Start

European Blackjack tables at 33 game are built with players of different budgets in mind. You can start with very small bets, which is convenient for newcomers — the pressure from mistakes is low. High-limit tables are available for experienced players who want to wager more.

Live dealer tables generally have a slightly higher minimum bet, as multiple players may be at the table at the same time and a professional dealer is involved. Digital tables usually have a lower minimum. It is worth checking the betting range of a table before joining.

Joining the 33 game VIP programme may give you access to exclusive high-limit tables. The VIP system has four tiers from Bronze to Platinum, offering weekly cashback and special benefits.

Common Questions

The biggest difference is when the dealer receives the second card. In the American variant, the dealer gets two cards from the start and checks immediately for blackjack. In the European variant, the dealer only draws the second card after all players have made their decisions. This means there is a risk of the dealer having blackjack after you have already Doubled Down or Split — which makes the decision-making slightly different.

A Soft hand is one where the Ace is counted as 11. For example, Ace + 6 is Soft 17. If you take another card, you cannot Bust because the Ace can drop to 1. A Hard hand has no Ace, or the Ace must be counted as 1. With a Soft hand, it is often a good idea to hit or Double Down.

It depends on the rules of the specific table. Most European Blackjack tables allow a hand to be Split up to two or three times. There may be extra restrictions on splitting Aces — sometimes you only receive one card on each Split Ace. It is worth checking the rules before sitting at a table.

If your total goes over 21, that is called a Bust. When you Bust, your bet is lost immediately — it does not matter what the dealer does. Likewise, if the dealer Busts, all players still in the hand win.
